Stations of the Cross - set of 14 paintings on canvas

A set of fourteen paintings comprising the entire Stations of the Cross of Christ's passion. The paintings are made on high quality moisture resistant canvas and printed using high quality printing, additionally protected with UV resistant laminate.

History of the Stations of the Cross

In the early days of Christianity, no attention was paid to the sites of Christ's passion and death because it was believed in the swift second coming of Christ to earth. It was not until the 4th century that Eusebius and St. Jerome mention pilgrims who came from all over the world to bow down to Jesus at the places where he suffered. We find clear traces of veneration of the Way of the Cross in the 12th century. However, the authentic Way was not known; the difficulty was in determining where Pilate's praetorium lay (was it in Antonia's castle or Herod's palace, on Mount Sinai or in the valley of Tyropeon near the Upper Room?).
The cult of the Way of the Cross as we know it began to be promoted by the first Franciscans during Holy Week to commemorate the scenes of the Lord's passion. As guardians of the holy places, they facilitated the experience of the Via Dolorosa for pilgrims, and later came up with the idea of celebrating the Way of the Cross with the help of paintings or sculptures at the place of residence: in a church or in an open space.

The traditional form of celebrating the Way of the Cross

During Stations of the Cross services, altar servers with crosses and candles, along with the faithful, go from station to station. At each station, the leader says: Station one (second, third, etc.), then lists the following Stations of the Cross recorded in Catholic tradition:
Lord Jesus condemned to death.
The Lord Jesus takes the cross on his shoulders.
The Lord Jesus falls under the cross for the first time.
The Lord Jesus meets his mother.
Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
Saint Veronica rubs the face of the Lord Jesus.
The Lord Jesus falls under the cross for the second time.
The Lord Jesus comforts the weeping women.
The Lord Jesus falls under the cross for the third time.
The Lord Jesus stripped of his garments.
The Lord Jesus nailed to the cross.
The Lord Jesus dies on the cross.
The Lord Jesus taken down from the cross.
The Lord Jesus laid in the tomb.

The participants in the service then kneel and at the call of the leader: We bow down to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ, and bless Thee, they answer: that Thou hast redeemed the world through Thy Cross and Passion, or: that Thou hast redeemed the world through Thy Holy Cross.
A meditation on the given station follows.
After the meditation, the leader says: Have mercy on us, Lord. All respond: Have mercy on us.
Then the hymn is sung: Who suffered wounds for us, Jesus Christ have mercy on us, during which one moves to the next station.
